Coaches Helping Coaches
August of 2017, a call went out that Aldine High School Head Coach Bill Smith’s house was devastated by flooding after Hurricane Harvey made landfall. Lots of former students and staff members volunteered their time and effort to help Bill and Brenda clean-up and move. What was notable was the one group of folks that kept showing up were all retired coaches. Not that other coaches or students didn’t want to help, it was just they all had jobs and they had to go back to work.
The retired coaches had the time and ability to come help a fellow coach. Coaches helping Coaches. We have come a long way since trying to organize this group, but here we are now as a non-profit service organization.
A group of retired men and women retired from the greatest profession in the world, ready, willing and able to help fellow coaches.

Yes, before my coaching career of 36 years, I competed in Track and Cross Country at Pearland High School and Stephen F. Austin State University.
I’ve coached over 30 football playoff games and two UIL State Football Championships,winning 1990 Class 5A; coached numerous track athletes to the UIL State meet, winning 3 gold medals; in Cross Country coached 4 teams to the UIL State Meet.
I retired in 2016 with a heavy heart.
Yes, we are all involved in the lifestyle. I’m married to the best coaches wife for over 34 years, Lisa is an RN. Our son Alex is the Defensive Coordinator at Stratford High School, his wife Stacy is an RN. Our daughter Katy teaches at Axtell Jr. High and is married to Jordan Mills, the Head Basketball coach at Axtell High School. Our daughter Abby is an RN and her wife Maya Vasquez is serving in the US Navy.

I am from Texas. I am the youngest of 8 children, including 6 brothers. I got my toughness from them and my sister. I was a 4yr letterman in basketball at Aldine High School before going off to play in college after earning a scholarship. I had a career ending playing injury my junior year at Lamar University, so I came home back to Houston where I finished my degree at the University of Houston. I got my desire to serve from my saint of a Mother who taught me about having a good work ethic and a loving heart and how those will carry you far
Out of college, I actually taught elementary for 10 years before taking my first paid coaching job was at Hambrick Middle School where I coached basketball, volleyball, and soccer.
My earliest coaching was coaching youth at a YMCA. After Hambrick middle school, I coached at MacArthur High School serving as the JV coach. In 2012, I became the head coach at MacArthur. In between my JV and Varsity jobs, I also coached AAU with Houston Hoops and IBA.
My favorite thing about coaching is the friends and colleagues I have met along the way. Another favorite of mine is just being able to make a difference in the lives of young athletes, not just the ones I coached directly, but indirectly as well. Coaching isn’t about winning on the court; it’s about winning in life. It makes me feel good that I know that I made a difference in young ladies lives that have gone on to become successful young women in the working world. It was a great journey, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Coaching may not last a lifetime, but the memories well.
I look forward to just relaxing and building. I say building because I like to make different crafts and build things around my house. I have built a shed and different shelves to spice up our house. I also have painted the inside of our house. I also look forward to spending time with my numerous nieces and nephews and just enjoying life in a more relaxed way with my spouse, dogs and family. I hope to grow in my faith and just become an all around better person.

I am originally from the great state of Michigan. I went to college at Michigan State University and immediately upon graduating in 1980 I came down to Texas. It was here where my coaching career began, where I met my handsome husband Dean, and built an incredible career, loving marriage and wonderful life. We have a daughter Brittany and she and her husband have given us 3 beautiful grand babies.
My first job was at Mt.Carmel High School as the head basketball and softball coach from 1981-1984.
After 7 years at Aldine High School I then coached at Eisenhower High School and then moved to MacArthur Ninth Grade School where I retired from in 2020. That is 36 years of service in Aldine ISD.
I have coached basketball, cross country, volleyball, track, softball and golf.
The friends I’ve made along the way. I have been truly blessed to work with outstanding colleagues and truly caring coaches throughout my career. It has been a privilege, honor and a ton of fun coaching all the wonderful athletes over the last 39 years.
I look forward to relaxing while still having the opportunity to help and support others in need.
You can now find me either on the golf course, hanging out poolside with a cold beverage, traveling about, or playing with the grand babies.
Retirement is great—-where everyday is Saturday—except Sunday!

I was a football athlete at J. Frank Dobie High School and Stephen F. Austin State University.
I graduated from Texas A&M University (WHOOP!) and started on the journey of realizing my lifelong dream.
Because I had several very influential coaches in my life, I was inspired to join the noble profession of coaching high school kids.
I have been extremely blessed to have coached for 28 years.
During my 28 years of coaching I’ve had the privilege of working with many outstanding athletes and coaches in football, track, baseball and basketball.
Yes, my beautiful wife of 32 years, Brenda was also a teacher/coach. My son Bryan works for Kroger, my daughter Brittany is also a teacher at Oak Ridge High School, and my 5 year old grandson Gage is a future star in the making.
